Several stars pick up Laureus sports award nominations

Many of the most accomplished players of 2017 are being recognized for their outstanding achievements as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Garbine Muguruza, Jelena Ostapenko, wheelchair layer Yui Kamiji, and the French Davis Cup team earned nominations for Laureus Sports Awards.

Nadal and Federer each won two Grand Slams and the two 30-somethings rose to No. 1 and No. 2 in the world respectively. The Swiss was also recognized with a nomination for comeback of the year.

Two of the major titlists on the women’s side were recognized as well with Williams and Muguruza receiving sportswoman of the year nominations.

Ostapenko stunned the world when she blasted her way to a maiden Grand Slam trophy at the French Open and the Latvian was nominated for breakthrough of the year.

Tennis, a sport not synonymous with team performances, saw France's Davis Cup champions receive a nomination for team of the year after their win over Belgium.

Kamiji of Japan was recognized for her dominant 2017 season, one that saw her win three of the four Grand Slam titles.

The winners of the Laureus Sports Awards will be announced February 27th in Monaco.
