Stat of the Day: Novak Djokovic reaches 50th Grand Slam quarterfinal of career
He’s just the second man—and fifth player overall—to hit that milestone in the Open Era.
A day after the tennis world took a breather on Middle Sunday, Novak Djokovic came out swinging on Manic Monday, beating Cristian Garin in the round of 16 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
Djokovic’s win over the No. 20-ranked Chilean not only sends him into his 12th career Wimbledon quarterfinal, it sends him into his milestone 50th career Grand Slam quarterfinal.
He’s just the second man in tennis history to reach 50 major quarterfinals, after Roger Federer, who reached his 58th with a 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 fourth-round victory over Lorenzo Sonego later in the day.
“You always enjoy obviously hearing those stats,” Djokovic said afterwards. “Again, it’s a privilege to break records in the sport that I truly love. I’m devoted to this sport as much as I think anybody out there on the tour. I just try to do my best.
“Of course, they are a motivating factor. I am aware that there are many records on the line. I’m not aware of all of them. Of course, they do inspire me to play my best tennis.”
The Serb is just the fifth player in the Open Era, male or female, to reach 50 career Grand Slam quarterfinals. After Federer’s 58, Serena Williams and Chris Evert are tied at 54, followed by Martina Navratilova at 53 and Djokovic at 50.
Between them, those five players have won 98 career Grand Slam titles.
