Stat of the Day: Rublev first player to 25 wins in 2021
The Russian is the first man or woman to record 25 tour-level wins this season.
Each day of the week we'll highlight one of the most intriguing numbers or stats of the day...
World No. 7 Andrey Rublev beat No. 138-ranked Italian lucky loser Federico Gaio in his opening match in Barcelona on Wednesday, 6-4, 6-3, to improve his record in 2021 to 25-5.
The Russian wasn’t happy with his behavior in the match, though.
“It wasn’t about the game, it was more mental,” he said in his on-court interview. “I was mad with myself, the way I was behaving today, after especially what I’ve been improving in Monte Carlo. So not much to say—I’m happy that I won, because that’s the most important thing, but for the moment I’m really angry, so hopefully next matches I can improve myself to have better behavior on the court."
Despite that, he’s the first player, man or woman, to record 25 tour-level wins this year.
The only other players who’ve recorded 20 or more tour-level wins this year are Stefanos Tsitsipas, who got his 23rd win of the year in Barcelona on Wednesday with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Spanish wild card Jaume Munar, and Garbine Muguruza, who’s 21-6 on the year (but isn’t playing this week).
