For Tsitsipas, Friday’s win over Ruud had a double—even triple—meaning.
“I came out on the court today and it was my mom’s birthday,” the Greek said after the match. “I know yesterday was my birthday, but as I said it was my mom’s birthday and her sister’s birthday, so I would like to wish them a happy birthday.
“I tried my best out on the court and obviously had it in the back of my head that I wanted to make them proud today.”
