Sunday Slice: Prince George lifts Wimbledon trophy, Novak Djokovic makes Nick Kyrgios “bromance” official

The King and the Prince

It took Novak Djokovic seven trips to the All England Club to lift the elusive Wimbledon trophy, but young Prince George got his hands on it in his first visit.

Accompanied by parents Prince William and Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, the eight-year-old came to Centre Court to watch his very first Wimbledon final between Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios on Sunday.

Dressed to the nines in the royal box, some joked that Kyrgios’ notoriously irascible on-court behavior could prove a bad influence on the eight-year-old princeling while others drew parallels to when the late Princess Diana took a young William to Wimbledon in 1991:

Following Djokovic’s 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3), William and Kate took George to meet the former world No. 1, who graciously let the youngster hold his trophy.

“Don’t drop it!” warned his royal highness.

Getting Bro-mantic

It seems Djokovic was making friends all over the place on Sunday as he solidified his bourgeoning bromance with the vanquished Kyrgios during the on-court trophy presentation.

"I never thought I was going to say so many nice things about you, considering the relationship,” he told Sue Barker, having just heaped praise on the Aussie for making his first major final. “Ok, it's officially a bromance!"

So Long, Sue!

While Wimbledon welcomed Djokovic into the winner’s circle for a seventh time, the tennis world also bid farewell to Barker, the longtime BBC broadcaster who announced her retirement following this fortnight.

A Roland Garros champion in 1976, Barker went on to be the nation’s premier analyst for 30 years, conducting the annual trophy ceremonies and interviews with the champions and runners-up.

Former WTA colleague Billie Jean King led an emotional tribute following Sunday’s finale.
