Teenager Marta Kostyuk leaves her mark on Stuttgart
Former junior No. 2 Marta Kostyuk is only 15 years old, but she's having no trouble at all adapting to the WTA tour. She first burst on the scene by winning five matches at this year's Australian Open to reach the third round.
She backed that stunning result up by winning an ITF $60,000 in Burnie and reaching a final of another $60,000 in Zhuhai. This week in Stuttgart, she returned to WTA action by recording four wins, including one over Alize Cornet in qualifying.
Kostyuk's run ended on Thursday in a tight three-setter against world No. 7 Caroline Garcia in the round of 16. But she didn't go down without a fight:
She pushed Garcia to the brink in a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 loss:
And showed off her ability to transition quickly from defense to offense:
The Ukrainian will leave this week with a 24-6 record on the year, an astonishing accomplishment for a player of any age.
And she's not forgetting to have fun along the way, interacting with the fans she's rapidly attracting.
Thanks to her week in Stuttgart, Kostyuk will rise to a career-high ranking of No. 133.
