The Baseline Top 5: Houston surprises
Cristian Garin's win was the latest unexpected result at the clay-court tournament.
Cristian Garin and Casper Ruud are two of the brightest young talents on the ATP Tour and could conceivably be facing off for titles for years to come as seen in the just-completed U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships final, won by Garin.
While their encounter might have been somewhat surprising going into the tournament, Houston has seen its share of shocks over the years. Here’s a look at some of them.
1
Roddick Shows Savvy at an Early Age
Fresh off the first title of his career in Atlanta in 2001, 18-year-old Andy Roddick followed that up with his second triumph in as many weeks on the clay in Houston. On his way to victory, the wild-card entrant ran through several veterans with established bona fides on the dirt: Fernando Meligeni, Magnus Gustafson and Stefan Koubek.
2
Sock’s Quick Comeback
Playing only his third tournament of 2015 after a hip injury sidelined him at the end of the previous year, American Jack Sock won his first career singles title, defeating his veteran countryman Sam Querrey in the final.
