The top fast facts from Andreescu's US Open win

NEW YORK—The women's final on Saturday saw Serena Williams take on first-time Grand Slam finalist Bianca Andreescu. For the fourth time in a row, Serena would lose a major final in straight sets with Andreescu taking it to her, 6-3, 7-5.

Here are the fast facts to know about Andreescu's historic accomplishment.

Andreescu is the first Canadian singles Grand Slam champion in the history of the Open era. Before the teen came along, the last Canadian singles finalist was Milos Raonic at Wimbledon in 2016. Before that Eugenie Bouchard was a runner-up at the All England Club in 2014.

She's the first teenager to win a Grand Slam since Maria Sharapova in 2006, the first person born in the 2000s to win any major and the first woman to win the US Open in her main-draw debut. Last year she lost in the first round of qualifying in New York, and she also lost in the first round of qualifying in 2017.

Megan Markle, the Duchess of York, had a seat in Serena's player box, right next to Serena's mother Oracene. Anna Wintour was also in Serena's section. Over in Andreescu's box, was a new famous face: her dog Coco.

Andreescu is 9-2 at the Grand Slam level (Serena's record is 349-49). The Canadian was in the qualifying draw of the Australian Open just this year, and she wrapped up her 2018 season ranked No. 152. She hasn't lost a completed match since Acapulco in early March.

Serena remains one win away from tying Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slams. She lost the first four finals since coming back from having her daughter in September 2017, including last year’s New York final to Naomi Osaka and the Wimbledon final earlier this month to Simona Halep.

Andreescu will crack the Top 5 for the first time when the new rankings come out Monday, marking her first time inside of the Top 10. When she played the 2018 US Open, she was ranked No. 208.
