Dominic Thiem to undergo MRI on wrist, Wimbledon status in doubt
The Austrian was forced to retire from his Mallorca opener against Adrian Mannarino.
Dominic Thiem will have to undergo tests to determine the exact extent of his wrist injury, according to his physio, Alex Stober.
The 27-year-old from Austria was leading 5-2 in his opener against Adrian Mannarino at this week's ATP Mallorca event when he experienced the injury, calling the trainer and saying he had heard a "crack" in his wrist.
Thiem did not attempt to play further and now appears doubtful for Wimbledon. But he will require MRI's to identify the issue, his physio added.
"You won't know anything immediately," Stober told Austrian press. "Cracking is never good. We're hoping it was just a slight twist, perhaps of the carpal bone... But right now everything is just speculation."
Thiem took a wildcard into Mallorca following a first-round exit at the French Open and said he had been satisfied with his game coming into the tournament.
"I was going back on a practice court for almost two weeks on a hard court, still at home, just to fix my shots again, because they were not as they should be in the claycourt season," Thiem said before starting play at Mallorca.
"I practiced two days in Austria on grass courts and already four days in Mallorca."
Thiem, who won his first Grand Slam at the 2020 US Open, has had a lackluster 9-8 record this season. The No. 5 also recently changed agencies, having settled an ongoing dispute with former coach Gunther Bresnik. He is coached by Nicolas Massu.
Prior to the injury, Thiem had also added the clay-court event in Hamburg to his schedule.
