Head-to-Head: First meeting

In Indian Wells, Andreescu didn't just kick the door down to announce her arrival, she shattered it. Before Andreescu became the record-breaking Canadian fans now know and love, she was outside the Top 50, without a WTA title and a wild card entry into the WTA Premier Mandatory.

Coming into the final, Kerber was the outright favorite, having had a strong run at the Australian Open and Doha, and was well-established as a two-time Grand Slam champion. Yet it was the unknown teenager who would prevail, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

The first meeting between them was repeated just a few days later in Miami. It turned out to be an unpleasant repeat for Kerber, who would also call the Canadian "the biggest drama queen ever" for her medical timeouts.

No one-hit wonder, Andreescu would beat the German there, too, and then miss the next few months with a shoulder injury.
