Rankings: No. 72 vs. No. 2

Head-to-Head: 2-3

During a season that has been mired in controversy for Kyrgios, it's easy to forget the success he had in 2019. Yet there was at least one very high highlight; during the Mexican Open, the then-world No. 72 player got to show off his best tennis against Nadal.

Until Acapulco, Kyrgios had only played three tournaments and lost before the third round in all of them. Compare that to Nadal who reached the final of the Australian Open.

It was looking like another dominating start to the season for the Spaniard so no one predicted the loss to Kyrgios, especially after the first set and not one, not two, but three match points. Yet Kyrgios would not only defeat Nadal, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (6), but go on to win the entire tournament for his first title in almost a year.
