Top 5 Photos, 3/11: Fritz shuts down Shapovalov in Doha

Everywhere you turned, it seemed the unexpected was happening in both Doha and Dubai. One American upset another top seed, while a major champion saw his comeback-return campaign end in the quarterfinal round.

Taylor Fritz

The American kept the momentum going after upsetting Doha's No. 6 seed David Goffin by following it up with a win over Denis Shapovalov. Fritz dropped the opening set, but found his rhythm to edge past the No. 4 seed, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.

Jessica Pegula

It appeared the American was well on her way to entering her second semifinal showing of the season in Dubai. Pegula led Elise Mertens, 7-5, 5-2, and had four match points but couldn't convert. On one of those match points, Mertens served a second serve, but the court's match point lights flashed, which resulted in the point being replayed and a restored first serve.

Barbora Krejcikova

The Czech is making some noise on the courts in Dubai this week. Krejcikova is through to her first 1000-level semifinal showing after dismissing Anastasia Potapova, 6-0, 6-2. The 25-year-old has yet to drop a set in her dazzling campaign.

Roger Federer

The 20-time major champion performed well, but it wasn't good enough to defeat Nikoloz Basilashvili. In the deciding set, Federer was one point away from closing out the match, but the Georgian would rally back to post a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 score in the Doha quarterfinal.

The 39-year-old looked solid at times, but a step too slow in others. With two knee surgeries and 14 months away from the action, it will undoubtedly be a long road for the Swiss star.

Jil Teichmann

The world No. 54 avenged her two first-round losses to Coco Gauff in Australia last month by taking a decisive 6-3, 6-3 win over the teenager in Dubai. Teichmann will look to capture more revenge when she faces Krejcikova for a spot in the final round. The last time the two competitors met was last year in Ostrava, with Krejcikova claiming a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
