What a day it was at Roland Garros as players scored their first-ever career victories on the red clay, while a Daniil Medvedev will have to wait another year for a crack at success in Paris.

Tennys Sandgren

In four hours and 31 minutes, American Tennys Sandgren squeezed past No. 29 seed Hubert Hurkacz, 7-5, 2-6, 4-6, 7-6 (1), 11-9, to claim his first-ever victory at Roland Garros. Sandgren will next face lucky loser Daniel Elahi Galan, who defeated Cameron Norrie.

Rafael Nadal

Although so much has changed, the 12-time Roland Garros champion proved that some things stay the same. In the Spaniard's opener, he seamlessly moved past Egor Gerasimov 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Nadal will face American Mackenzie McDonald in the second round on Wednesday.

Elina Svitolina

The No. 3 seed eased past Varvara Gracheva, 7-6 (2), 6-4, to claim her 60th Grand Slam victory. Svitolina is fresh off taking the Strasbourg title and will next face qualifier Renata Zarazua, who claimed her first career Grand Slam main-draw match on Monday.

Daniil Medvedev

Medvedev has yet to taste a single victory on the terre battue in Paris. The world No. 5 fell to Marton Fucsovics, 6-4, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-1, in his opener and is now 0-4 in Paris. It also marks Medvedev's sixth consecutive loss on dirt.

Garbine Muguruza

The Spaniard showcased some great fight to prevail against Tamara Zidansek for a 7-5, 4-6, 8-6 victory. The world No. 15 trailed 0-3 in the deciding set but battled back to move past the Slovenian. Muguruza will face Kristyna Pliskova for the first time on Wednesday.
