Aside from a stray game or two—or, in one case, a single point—Wednesday's action only came from the US Open's two courts with retractable roofs. Every match scheduled on an outer court was washed out due to persistent rain. These are the Top 5 photos that sum up Day 3 at the US Open.

1. With another shaky start, Roger Federer dropped the first set of his second-rounder to Damir Dzumhur. But just as he did in the first round, the 20-time Grand Slam champion rallied to win, this time by a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 score—reminding everyone that it's not how you start, but how you finish. The Swiss star kept a perfect 19-0 second-round record at the US Open.

2. Much of Wednesday's play was washed out due to relentless rain that fell across the grounds. Some top names dodged the rain delay with matches under the roofs at Louis Armstrong and Arthur Ashe stadiums.

3. Venus Williams made the No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina work for every point. But after five missed match-point opportunities, the Ukranian took the second-round match, 6-4, 6-4, in just under two hours. Svitolina will appear in the US Open's third round for the fifth straight year, and will continue her run against either Rebecca Peterson or Dayana Yastremska.

4. All outer court matches will resume on Thursday, which will make for an action-packed day. The 18-year-old Jenson Brooksby will face No. 17 seed Nikoloz Basilashvili for a spot in the third round. Brooksby's US Open performance may determine whether or not he continues on the big stage or goes to Baylor University to play college tennis. Toronto and Indian Wells champion Bianca Andreescu, who has been on top of her game on hard courts this season, will also continue her run.

5. Although there were patches of dry weather, it was never long enough for US Open staff to fully dry courts and resume play. Stadium-ticket holders still saw action at night, featuring 16-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and six-time US Open champion Serena Williams.
