1. Hungry to capture her third win against a Top 10 player, Alison Riske started off firing but couldn’t dismiss Naomi Osaka. The fourth-seeded Japanese extended her winning streak to seven consecutive matches, after posting a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Riske. Osaka will face a daunting Bianca Andreescu for a spot in the semifinals.

2. David Goffin has proven to be a tough competitor on the Japan hard courts. It was no different on Thursday as the 2017 Tokyo champion rallied past rising star Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2), to book an appointment with Hyeon Chung, who upset Marin Cilic, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

3. Relentless Bianca Andreescu eased past American Jennifer Brady, 6-1, 6-3, to set up a blockbuster clash with Naomi Osaka. The win marked the Canadian’s 17th consecutive match victory and her sixth WTA tour-level quarterfinal of the season.

4. After knocking off No. 2 seed Borna Cornic, local favorite Taro Daniel consolidated the win with a  6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over Jordan Thompson at the Japan Open. Daniel, along with Yasutaka Uchiyama, ended a 47-year drought to become the first two Japanese players to reach the final eight in Tokyo since 1972.

5. Caroline Wozniacki is inching closer to retaining her China Open title. The Dane defeated Katerina Siniakova, 7-5, 6-4, to capture her ninth consecutive Beijing win. The defending champion will face Daria Kasatkina for a spot in the semifinals.
