2. David Goffin has proven to be a tough competitor on the Japan hard courts. It was no different on Thursday as the 2017 Tokyo champion rallied past rising star Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2), to book an appointment with Hyeon Chung, who upset Marin Cilic, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

Daniel, along with Yasutaka Uchiyama, ended a 47-year drought to become the first two Japanese players to reach the final eight in Tokyo since 1972.
