Andy Murray avenged his August loss in Winston-Salem to Tennys Sandgren, defeating the American, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-1, in Zhuhai. By advancing past Sandgren, Murray picked up his first tour-level singles victory since winning his 2019 season opener in Brisbane over James Duckworth.

Wang Qiang delighted home fans in Wuhan with her 6-3, 6-3 victory over Marie Bouzkova. Wang thrived on home turf a year ago, which included triumphing in Guangzhou and reaching successive semifinals in Wuhan and Beijing.

Alex de Minaur will face off against Murray for the first time in the Zhuhai second round after coming through an all-Aussie affair. De Minaur, who appeared in the round of 16 at the US Open, dismissed John Millman, 6-1, 6-3, in 70 minutes.

Russia's Veronika Kudermetova sprung the biggest upset of the day in Wuhan when she ousted seventh seed Belinda Bencic, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round. Bencic was playing her first match since being edged out in the US Open semifinals by eventual champion Bianca Andreescu.
