Top 5 photos: Wimbledon doubles champs include new No. 1 Strycova
In capturing her first Grand Slam title with Hsieh Su-wei, Barbora Strycova will become the latest WTA player to reach No. 1 in doubles on Monday.
Wimbledon provided an exciting tournament full of headline-making doubles play throughout the fortnight. These are the Top 5 moments recapping the postcard moments from championship weekend.
1. Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah entered Wimbledon on a hot streak after winning their first grass-court title in Eastbourne. The second seeds captured their 10th straight win and the Wimbledon doubles title after posting a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6), 6-7 (5), 6-3 triumph over Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin. This is the first Grand Slam victory for Farah, while Cabal won a mixed doubles title at the 2017 Australian Open alongside Abigail Spears.
2. Mahut was hit three times in the grueling doubles final. The Frenchman was struck just above his eye by an overhead recorded at 122 mph. The match was put on hold while a doctor looked at Mahut and went through the mandatory concussion protocol. The match would continue and Mahut later took two more shots in the chest.
3. The mixed doubles play certainly captured more attention than usual when the high-profile team of Andy Murray and Serena Williams entered the competition. However, it was a proven pair that took the title. Latisha Chan and Ivan Dodig followed up their second French Open victory with their first Wimbledon title by defeating the first-time pairing of Jelena Ostapenko and Robert Lindstedt, 6-2, 6-3.
4. Always one to keep things light, Lindstedt traded trophies with Dodig during the presentation. The Swede was looking to win his first Wimbledon crown in his fourth final, having finished runner-up three consecutive years from 2010-2012 in the men's doubles event with Horia Tecau.
5. The No. 3 seeds Barbora Strycova and Hsieh Su-wei seamlessly claimed the Wimbledon title with a, 6-2, 6-4, victory over Gabriela Dabrowski and Xu Yifan. This was a big win for Strycova, as she not only claimed her first Grand Slam but will also rise to world No.1 in doubles for the first time in her career. The Czech lost to Serena Williams in the singles semifinal, but ended the tournament with a ticket to the Champions Ball.
