As a WTA rookie still in her teens, Andreescu won the 2019 US Open, Rogers Cup and Indian Wells, and put together a 17-match win streak. But the best reason to believe in Andreescu’s future success may have been Serena’s seal of approval. “I think we’re really similar; we both are fighters and are really intense,” Serena said after their US Open final.

When a 23-time major champion sees something of herself in you, you’re probably going places. If there was a reason for caution, it came not from Andreescu’s game, but from her body. She missed significant time due to injury in 2019, and withdrew from the WTA Finals. She has the mind and the shots; the final piece of the puzzle for 2020 and beyond may be her fitness.
