In the 11 Slams played since Serena’s last major triumph, at the 2017 Australian Open, there have been nine different winners. Yet many would argue that the tour has thrived, rejuvenating itself with new types of stars—brash Bianca, bashful Naomi—for a new decade.

What has been best about this period, above all, is that it’s been about success rather than failure. Instead of Slam-less No. 1s, we’ve seen Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki make major breakthroughs. Instead of young players failing to measure up, we’ve seen Andreescu and Osaka rise to the biggest occasions. Tennis always has a future, and it should be fun to watch this one continue to take shape in 2020.
