Vesnina cheers on Russia for start of World Cup

Tennis is going to be fighting for attention for the next month against a huge sporting event, the 2018 World Cup. With this year's edition hosted by Russia, Elena Vesnina is in her home nation supporting her team.

The first game of the World Cup kicked off on Thursday with Russia beating Saudi Arabia 5-0 in Game 1 of Group A. Vesnina was in the stands for the big event, producing live content for the WTA's Instagram feed.

Her WTA peers are ready to cheer on their home nations too:

Vesnina is down to No. 50 in singles, but sits at No. 1 in the doubles rankings (with her partner Ekaterina Makarova).

The 31-year-old suffered first-round exits in both singles and doubles at Roland Garros, but will turn her attention soon from Russia's World Cup hopes to the grass-court season.
