On Stuttgart, it was not just another day in the office for the No. 2 seeded team of Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares. On a day that saw the top singles seed Roger Federer ousted by veteran Tommy Haas, nothing was out of the question, not even a marathon with 11 match points.
Soares and Jamie Murray would defeat Brian Baker and Nikola Mektic in an epic quarterfinal clinching the victory, 6-4, 6-7(8), 10-8, on yes, their eleventh match point.
Baker and Mektic, who have won two titles together this year, would just not give up. They fought off their first match point at 4-5 in the second set, and then staved off three more at 5-6. The duo then came back from 3-6 down in the set tiebreaker to even the score, only to hold off another at 6-7. They would steal the set, 10-8 in the tiebreaker, to send the match to a deciding tiebreak.
Murray and Soares got up 9-6 in the deciding ten-point tiebreaker, racking up more three match points before Baker and Mektic made yet another comeback. Finally, at 9-8, Murray and Soares won an extended rally on Murray’s serve to wrap up the win.
