Medvedev was on his way to a love hold against the former world No. 3 when chair umpire Adel Nour issued a time violation at 5-5, 40-0, for taking too long between points.
Believing he was delayed by the ball kids, Medvedev struck an angry ace and spent the subsequent changeover monologuing to Nour about the incident.
“Do you see? Open your eyes. No, you don’t have eyes, man. You’re so bad,” exclaimed Medvedev, who cited a 2021 match involving good friend Karen Khachanov—one that Nour also oversaw.
“I remember…you don’t have eyes,” continued the 2021 US Open champion, drying his hands with a towel.
Medvedev, who rang in the new season with the arrival of his second child, would go on to lose the set to Wawrinka in a tiebreaker but roar back in three to advance, 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-1.
