WATCH: Gibbs sounds off on coaching, best-of-five & more
Nicole Gibbs is known for her precisely crafted screeds, so the Dow Tennis Classic in Michigan decided to put her on the spot for some quick opinions in a segment called "The Gibbs of Gab."
Host Blair Henley asked Gibbs for her thoughts on a few controversial tennis topics of the day, and as expected, the 25-year-old responded with wit and tact.
When queried about on-court coaching, Gibbs said the concept "needs work."
"First of all, I think it should be the same—men's and women's," she said. "Second of all, I think the iteration that they're using at Grand Slams [in some events] is actually better, which is coaching from the side of the court, which happens anyway."
On the always-polarizing subject of whether the men should play best-of-five sets in the Slams, Gibbs made her position clear: "Best-of-three all day, at least through the semis."
Last, on the overall state of the game, she said that it's "in a good place, and in a place where it needs to continue to try to grow and stay with the times."
Gibbs fell in the first round of the Dow Tennis Classic, 6-0, 7-5, to 2018 junior Roland Garros finalists Caty McNally.
