WATCH: Ostapenko talks about making history in Paris
The Latvian took out Simona Halep in three sets to win the final
"I think I still haven't realized it."
Jelena Ostapenko, Roland Garros champion. It's got a great ring to it. The 20-year-old Latvian fought back from a set and 3-0 deficit against favorite Simona Halep to storm to victory, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. She's the first player in 20 years to win her maiden title at a Slam, joining Gustavo Kuerten.
Ostapenko was unseeded and ranked No. 47 going into the fortnight. She'll rise to No. 12 after all of her superb shot-making in Paris, even hitting a stunning backhand down-the-line winner on match point.
While many may have said Ostapenko came out of nowhere this tournament, everyone will know her name now.
She's the first singles Grand Slam champion ever from Latvia, and first unseeded player in the Open Era to win the women's crown in Paris.
"I still cannot believe I won Roland Garros," she said.
Well, you better believe it.
