WATCH: Vandeweghe ends nine-month injury hiatus

CoCo Vandeweghe has been off the grid since last appearing on court for doubles in Singapore last October. The American sustained a right ankle injury at last year's Wimbledon that she played through, and then struggled with a right foot injury during the offseason.

The 27-year-old made the difficult decision to postpone the start of her 2019 season to the summer. After a lot of rehab and recovery, she's back in action, hitting the court for the San Diego Aviators in World TeamTennis.

In her first on-court appearance on Monday, she scored a 5-3 singles win over Philadelphia Freedom's Taylor Townsend. Vandeweghe also lost a tight doubles set alongside her Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

Vandeweghe will next head to San Jose for her official WTA return. The Californian will be playing in front of her home crowd at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic; a tournament she's reached the final of twice. The two-time WTA titlist was granted a wild card into the main draw.

Before the injury setback, the American rose to a career-high singles ranking of No. 10 in 2017 after reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open and US Open. She captured the US Open doubles title with Ashleigh Barty last year.

Vandeweghe prepped for her 2019 return to competition by playing golf and tennis with TV host Holly Sonders, talking WTT, her recovery and what's next.

Although Vandeweghe had been off the court for ten months, she whipped out big serves as if she's never left.

Vandeweghe is currently ranked No. 626 in singles and No. 23 in doubles, but will use her protected ranking.
