Wimbledon Crisis Center, Day 10
By Rosangel Valenti, TW Contributing Editor
Good morning. As always, please use this post as today's place to discuss what's going on at Wimbledon. As this is a busy time here, we'd be grateful if you could keep the subject on tennis until the day's matches are completed, after which it's OK to go off-topic.
Daily Weather Report:
Right now, it's sunny and warm outside. Some heavy showers are expected in Wimbledon later today, but play has been taking place on some of the outside courts, so there's reason for optimism.
Player of the Day:
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both put on dominating performances yesterday, but Marat Safin gets my vote, for reaching his first Wimbledon semifinal, and winning five matches in a row for the first time since he reached that famous semifinal with Roger Federer at the Australian Open in 2005. He may have benefited somewhat from the rain delay that left the match suspended at 5-2 in the first set, which Feliciano Lopez went on to take, but afterwards gave a fine display, and took the next three.
Match of the Day:
If looking for the best contest, this is a tough one, as Venus Williams and Serena Williams surely must be the strong favourites in today's two semifinals. Venus, the four-time champion, has a 5-2 head-to-head against her opponent, Elena Dementieva. This doesn't tell us much - they have never met on grass - and the only two times they have faced off in the past four years (won by Williams) were on clay.
Serena Williams has only faced Zheng Jie once before - four years ago, in the first round at Wimbledon. The score that day was 6-3, 6-1 to Williams. She, of course, went on to play the final that year. Still, Zheng has had an extraordinary run this year at Wimbledon - can she pull off another upset?
After yesterday's rainy spells, there's also a men's semifinal berth to be decided over on Court 1, where the match between Rainer Schuettler and Arnaud Clement was stopped overnight at one set apiece.
As always, enjoy today's tennis.
