Halep Stuns Serena

The Romanian had won just one match in 10 tries against the American. The only time she had scored a victory was in the 2014 WTA Finals in Singapore, and had lost six consecutive encounters since then.

The final featured seventh-seeded Halep and 11th-seeded Serena. The Top 5 seeds—Ashleigh Barty, Naomi Osaka, Karolina Pliskova, Kiki Bertens, and Angelique Kerber, respectively—failed to reach the quarterfinals.
