Elina Svitolina was struggling in her second-round match, but not as much as her opponent. Margarita Gasparyan was up 7-5 and battling at 5-6 in the second set when she had to retire with a left leg injury, which appeared to be cramp-related. The 15-year-old upset her idol Venus Williams in her first-round match on Monday, turning herself into a global sensation. On Wednesday, she stunned the world again by taking out 2017 semifinalist Magdalena Rybarikova, 6-3, 6-3, to reach the third round.

You know you've made it when Roger Federer congratulates you. Cori Gauff was greeted by the Swiss on the grounds and was giddy with glee.

She'll play Polona Hercog on Friday.

Sofia Kenin had a breakthrough fourth-round run in Paris, complete with a win over Serena Williams. But this time around, she had no such luck and lost to 19-year-old Dayana Yastremska, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Yastremska is as fast-rising and feisty as Kenin, and both have won two titles in 2019.

It's great to see Victoria Azarenka dispatching opponents with conviction again. The world No. 40 has had a slow comeback from having her son in 2016, but showed zero signs of rust in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ajla Tomljanovic. She will take on world No. 3 Simona Halep in the third round. Azarenka dropped just one game in her opening doubles win with Ashleigh Barty.

In his Wimbledon main-draw debut, Reilly Opelka has reached the third round. The 21-year-old ousted three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka 8-6 in the fifth set. Opelka won junior Wimbledon in 2015, but it's taken him some time to crack the Top 100.

"It's been very different," the world No. 63 said. "I spent a lot of time on the ITF Tour and had to play a lot of the Challengers and just kind of grinded for the last two years on there."
