Martina Hingis plays Kim Clijsters tomorrow in the quarterfinals here in Melbourne, and it ought to be a great test of the degree to which Hingis’s game can withstand the pressures applied to it by today’s top competitors.

Lindsay Davenport has a way with words, and a comment she made the other day is a trenchant gem that puts Hingis’s situation into perfect, simple perspective:

I love the way this remark alludes less to what an opponent does with a return than to the effect a good return may have on Hingis’s confidence.

That, I think, is an important distinction. I'm curious to see if Kim will have the poise, confidence and opportunity to get to Hingis's serve.
