The remaining three out of the ATP Big 4 all had comfortable straight sets victories in their R32 matches in Doha.  Pride of place went to Rafael Nadal: Fabrice Santoro, who was on the receiving end of a 6-1 6-2 6-0 scoreline against Federer at Melbourne in 2007, must be a bit cheesed off with draws against World No 1s in the early season.  Santoro could manage just 15 points and one game in this round of "thump the Magician."

Yesterday's Brisbane giant killer, Ernests Gulbis, had a tougher time against Santoro's compatriot Paul-Henri Mathieu.

But the pick of the day for fans of French tennis was surely Amelie Mauresmo's 12-10 final set tiebreak victory over Julie Coin.  A good omen for 2009?  On va voir...
